Uma Heller is a recurring character in Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, and Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building. She is a resident of the Arconia was a close friend of Bunny Folger.
She is portrayed by Jackie Hoffman.
History[]
Conflict with Charles[]
When Charles held up the elevator deciding whether to stay on to go to an audition or get off to talk to Mabel about Tim, Uma told him to get in or get out because she had places to be.[1]
Memorial for Tim Kono[]
When Tim Kono was found dead in his apartment from an apparent suicide, Uma attended the memorial service in the lobby of the Arconia. When Amy Huang asked if his death meant they could start using their fireplaces again, Uma remembered that he was the guy with the asthma, who once yelled at her for smoking outside. Later, when they learned that Howard's cat had died the same night as Tim, Uma said she was sad to heard it.[2]
Suspect Line-Up[]
Oliver did a line-up of the suspects to try to eliminate some possibilities. Uma was part of his line-up and she mocked fighting with Amy. Oliver wasn't interested in it.[3]
Charles's Disturbance[]
Uma peeked out of her apartment when she heard a loud noise outside. She saw Charles, who was carrying a trash bag.[4]
Podcast Finale[]
When the trio released what they intended to be the finale of their podcast pointing to Teddy and Theo Dimas as the killers, Uma and Bunny met up and listened to the podcast together while eating popcorn.[5]
Proposed Evictions[]
Due to the podcast, several residents of the building complained about Mabel, Charles, and Oliver violating their privacy. As a result, Bunny held a meeting where they discussed evicting the three of them. During this meeting, Uma said that she'd purchased a 12-pound brisket for a dinner party, but no one wanted to come because they were in the "murder building."[6]
Finding Charles and Trio's Arrest[]
Uma and Bunny entered the elevator and found Charles on the floor. Believing he'd gone on a bender, they ignored him.
Later, Uma was among those who watched as Mabel, Charles, and Oliver were arrested after being found with Bunny's body.[7]
Bunny's Last Day[]
On Bunny's last day as board president, Uma and Bunny met up and Bunny told Uma she was thinking of moving to Florida. Uma told Bunny about a cousin of hers who lived in Florida, but told Bunny she should go anyway. Later that evening, Bunny was murdered.[8]
Missing Painting[]
After Bunny's death, Uma went into Bunny's apartment to retrieve a Rose Cooper painting Bunny owned, which Uma was meant to take to get appraised. When she and Howard entered the apartment, they found that the painting was missing. They searched the apartment, in case it had simply been moved, but didn't find it.[9]
Memorial[]
Uma threw a memorial for Bunny in Bunny's apartment. She was upset when Oliver, Mabel, and Charles came, believing them to be the murderers. Later, when Howard said that Bunny was a bitch, Uma insisted she wasn't and was just alone in the world, except for Uma and Mrs. Gambolini. She was surprised when Bunny's mother, Leonora Folger, entered the party, saying the painting was hers and she wanted it back. She also asked what they knew about her daughter's murder. Uma directed her to the trio, saying they probably did it. Leonora sniffed each of them and declared that they didn't do it, but they did know something.[10]
Killer Reveal Party[]
Uma was among the Arconia residents who were invited to a "Killer Reveal Party" at Bunny's apartment. When they had all arrived, the attendees debated if a killer reveal party was a party to reveal a killer or a reveal party that was killer in nature. Before the could settle the debate, Oliver, Mabel, and Charles entered the party and explained that they'd solved Bunny's murder and would reveal the killer to them, but only as part of a show they were putting on and wanted them all to participate in. Uma was upset because the email had promised them cake, but she didn't see any. Oliver promised her the cake was on the way, then promised if they pulled it off, Charles would buy each of them a cake of their choosing. Once they'd all agreed, they began setting up. An hour later, Cinda and Poppy arrived, prepared to record their own podcast because Cinda believed they'd been invited to Mabel's confession. Charles explained that they'd be revealing Bunny's real killer and pointed the finger at Cinda. He declared that she'd killed Bunny and hid her tracks with the help of a crooked cop. She asked how he knew about Kreps. Charles then laid out how instead of solving crimes for her podcast, she made them up. Cinda asked why she'd want to kill a woman she never met. Lester interjected that he had the logs that showed several visits to the Arconia, meaning she did meet Bunny. Cinda said she was just keeping tabs on the Kono investigation. The trio tried more things to unsettle Cinda, but she still couldn't confess. Mabel said that was because she didn't do it and pointed the finger at Alice, saying she wanted the painting and when Bunny asked for too much money for it, Alice killed her to get it. Alice flew into a rage and grabbed a nearby knife, intending to stab Mabel, but hitting Charles instead when he pushed Mabel out of the way. Charles collapsed to the floor while Uma called the police and the others restrained Alice. Oliver and Mabel cried and held Charles's hand as he bled to death.
As Howard comforted Mrs. Gambolini, Uma told them police and the ambulance were three minutes away. Cinda said that she was sorry for Charles's death, but said Mabel was incredible and offered her a job, saying she could even have her own podcast. This upset Poppy, who said there was nothing tying Alice to the murder and her confessing was just pure luck. Meanwhile, Poppy does everything for Cinda. As she talked, Poppy started sneezing. She said she was the one to tell Cinda about the art in the first place. Mabel questioned why and Poppy said it was for a podcast, but Cinda wasn't interested. Poppy continued to sneeze as she talked, prompting Oliver to ask if she had some kind of allergy, perhaps to Mrs. Gambolini. Mabel said the killer sneezed while leaving the crime scene. Poppy challenged that it wasn't uncommon to be allergic to birds and asked if they were going to believe some young girl hiding in the walls. Oliver said that only the killer could know about Lucy. Cinda then revealed that she knew that Poppy was really Becky Butler, the woman whose "murder" was the subject of Cinda's podcast, All Is Not OK in Oklahoma. When Poppy asked who told her that, Charles popped out from under the sheet and said it was them. The whole night was staged, including the two false accusations. Poppy said she just wanted to make a good podcast. She wanted Cinda to notice her, but things went wrong. While she talked about why she did it, Williams came in to arrest her while Kreps waited outside, already in handcuffs of his own.[11]
Ben's Death[]
Uma was irritated when a large crowd, the cast and crew of Oliver's play Death Rattle, who had come over after their lead, Ben Glenroy, collapsed on stage and was pronounced dead, gathered in the lobby of the Arconia. One of the elevators was out of order, so only seven people at a time could use the other and Uma was insistent that residents get priority. As they rode the elevator, Uma told Mabel, Oliver, and Charles that at least they kept this body out of the building. Ben showed up that night alive after having her stomach pumped but was then found dead when his body fell through the top of the elevator, frustrating Uma that another murder happened in the building said "You gotta be fuckin kidding me".[12] Uma ran off along with Charles, Mabel, and Oliver to find Lester.[13]
While dining at The Pickle Diner, carrying on a tradition in which she and Bunny would split a sandwich, only without Bunny, Uma spotted Charles. She invited him to sit with her, giving him the chance to see Ben's blood-soaked hankie in her bag. She left before he could talk to her about it. Later, when Charles came to her apartment to try to get it back, she told him she'd sold it to a CoBro fan for $7000.[14]
Death Rattle Dazzle[]
Uma came to the opening night of Death Rattle Dazzle, saying she was being supportive. She sat next to Jerry Blau and Matthew Broderick and they disparaged the show as they watched. When Uma saw that Oliver had taken over the lead role, she commented that he couldn't sing, act, dance, or direct. Due to behind-the-scenes antics, Uma noted that it was the strangest play she'd ever been to.[15]
Zach and Oliver[]
Uma was riding the elevator when the doors opened to reveal Oliver and Zach Galifianakis. Uma looked at them and said whatever they were up to, she didn't like it.[16] When the maintenance workers at the Arconia started installing security cameras, Uma was angry at the trio, saying it was all their doing.[17]
Personality[]
Uma is usually angry or sour about something. She even stays grumpy when talking to her friend Bunny. She particularly dislikes the trio and Tim Kono. However, she shows her kinder side when Howard Morris' cat Evelyn dies, seeming genuinely upset.
Relationships[]
Bunny Folger[]
Uma's only known friend is Bunny, and they were often seen together before Bunny's death.
Notes and Trivia[]
- She often steals items that remind her of people.[14]
