Charles said something so offensive when he blacked out that Tom, a Christian, had to leave.[2] Later, when Matthew Broderick was brought in to replace Charles, Tom played the piano while he rehearsed for hours and hours, wanting to get every single note perfect.[3] Tom continued his work with the show as they held their sitzprobe, the first rehearsal with the full orchestra.[4]
