The Velvet Room is a location that appears in Only Murders in the Building. It has been frequented by many high powered people over the decades.
History[]
Originally, the premises was the horse stables, situated under the Arconia, for the horses owned by the people of the building.
However, by the 1910's, the rise of the automobile rendered the stables (and horses) obsolete. It wasn't long before the space found a new, more lucrative use, thought up by some of New York's most infamous mobsters.
By the 1920s, the mob had secret gaming rooms all over the city, including now at the Arconia, named The Velvet Room.
It played host to many power players over the years since it's founding. For over a century, some of the most consequential decisions in the city were made here.
There were rumors that this was where the Empire State Building contract was awarded, as well as where it was decided that bars could stay open until 4:00 a.m., and where, at the very last second, "Zachary Taylor Island," was changed to "Roosevelt Island."
Even as things changed over the years, such as the fashion, decor, and clientele, one constant factor remained: the mob.
Everyone from Lucky Luciano to John Gotti wielded power over the five boroughs from this room, known to an elite few and still continues to this day.
To get there, you have to walk into the Doorman's room off the main lobby, then open a secret door hidden as shelves, before travelling down a staircase that's only opened with a specific deck of cards.
Notes and Trivia[]
- Charles-Haden Savage noted that the felt used on the gambling tables, is F1 Grade Lachlan felt, which is made from the wool of the now-extinct Scottish Dunface sheep.
