Randall Winston is a recurring character in Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building.
He is portrayed by Jermaine Fowler.
History[]
When Lester worried that after four murders had occurred in the building, he was missing things and not doing his job, he decided to bring on Randall, whom he trained to be a doorman.[2] Lester's death soon after resulted in him becoming the sole doorman for the building. At Lester's wake, Randall was shocked when Lorraine Coluca, Lester's widow, gave him Lester's building ledger. She insisted he would want Randall to have it. When people approached Lorraine, Randall whispered to her what their names were and which apartment they lived in.[3]
Randall struggled to fill Lester's shoes, becoming overwhelmed by tenant requests. While he was surrounded by people who all needed things, Oliver came up and shooed them away, then told Randall he was a natural and didn't even need the ledger he kept consulting. Then he snatched it from Randall's hands and ran away with it. Oliver later came back and returned the ledger. Randall said he was worried he'd never fill Lester's shoes. Oliver warned him not to try to fill Lester's shoes, but to be himself. He also said he'd lived there for a long time and could help complete Randall's unfinished training. But not right away because he had to go take a nap.[4]
Randall was upset when the board brought in LESTR, a robot that was designed to take over some of the doorman duties. Due to the doorman union, of which Randall was a member, they weren't able to fire him, meaning a human face would continue to open the door for tenants.[5]
When Oliver and Mabel came downstairs to talk to the staff, Randall panicked and began consulting Lester's ledger when they asked him questions. Soon after this, they found a table that had "Die Lester die" carved into it. Randall admitted to carving it, but said he was referring to LESTR, whom he worried about taking his job. Oliver decided to call a building meeting so they could discuss the staff's concerns. At the meeting, Randall shared that a building was about the people, only to be overrun by tenants who said they preferred the robot. During the meeting, LESTR disappeared and was later pushed out a window into the courtyard.[6]
Randall helped Charles, Mabel, and Oliver track the purchase of the Arconia apartments. They quickly realized she only needed to purchase one more to get a majority and the sale was pending on Grover Stanley's place.[7]
After discovering Randall was in the courtyard shortly after Lester's death and took the blood-covered elevator crank away from the scene, Mabel, Charles, and Oliver confronted him. As soon as they said what they were there for, Randall fled. He ended up squatting in an empty apartment until they discovered he was there and confronted him again. He tried to run again, but he ran into Theo Dimas. The trio accused him of Lester's murder, but he explained that he hadn't killed Lester, but knew that Lester had killed Nicky and so he hid the crank in Nicky's office to keep anyone from finding that out. LESTR was able to show the others that he was telling the truth by playing a video from that night of the two of them. The realized Lester had died trying to save their building and they failed him by not solving the murder. They decided to reopen the investigation and went to Oliver's place for a Last Supper themed party. At the party, they discovered that Nonna had been the one to steal the finger from Charles' freezer.[1]
On move-out date, Randall saw the trio in the lobby and said it was good that they were getting one last look before it was gone, because Camila was going to announce that the Arconia was going to be demolished to build her casino, because she'd found out that was cheaper.
Later, while the trio was confronting Beau Tillman, Lester's killer, Randall helped prevent him from fleeing by helping Vince release pigeons in the stairwell.
Three months later, Randall was still working at the Arconia and announced that Howard had a visitor.[8]
