Full Summary[]
Charles, as Brazzos, stands from his wheelchair, saying he can still send the investigation in a new direction. The director calls for Charles to freeze and has Sazz tap in for him. Sazz takes her position and jumps off the roof, landing on an airbag below. She puts up her thumb to show she's okay and the director calls cut. Sazz climbs off the airbag and grabs an ice pack, which she presses to her neck. Sazz sits on a box turned sideways and watches one of the writers from Brazzos eat a plate of food someone else brought her. Charles comes up to Sazz, asking if she's okay. She tells him she's all good. He says he's getting worse with heights and she tells him she has him, so he doesn't have to worry about a thing.
Sazz listens to the "Only Murders in the Building" podcast as she types on her typewriter. She has typed out the title page for her "Only Murders in the Building" movie script. She adds it to the script sitting next to her and smiles.
Charles and Oliver recap that the killer is Rex Bailey also known as Marshall P. Pope, who is also the stunt worker and screenwriter. Oliver wonders where Mabel is, because they need her young brain. Charles says he texted Mabel as soon as they found out and she hasn't replied. As they talk, Charles realizes a new body drops every time they solve a murder. Oliver is upset with him for saying that, since his wedding is tomorrow. Loretta is even already on her way. Oliver becomes convinced she'll be the next murder victim. Charles gets a text from Mabel's phone threatening to kill Mabel if they come to her door or call the police. They go to the window and look across the courtyard to see Marshall holding Mabel hostage. Marshall puts the blinds down so they can't see her anymore.
Mabel tries to excuse herself, but Marshall jumps off the wall to block her and says she's not going anywhere. She says he's pretty fit for a writer. She figures out he was Sazz's protégé. He stole her script and killed her. Marshall can't believe he has to kill Mabel. It was just supposed to be Sazz and now he's having to kill more. He says he didn't want to kill Glen, but it was only a matter of time before he realized why Marshall looked familiar. He hates that he accidentally shot Zach Galifianakis. Mabel says he can kill her, but then he'll be on his own with the re-write. He knows she's just trying to buy time and says he won't fall for that. She says he's in charge of the whole thing, but she points out a serious mischaracterization in his script. Marshall lowers his gun, saying they can finish the scene and then he'll kill her.
Charles and Oliver watch from the window. Oliver wants to go to Mabel. Charles realizes it was one person after all. The ledge is the key. That's how the shoe print got on the radiator. That's how he killed her and disposed of the body in twelve minutes. And that's how they'll save Mabel. Marshall said he'd kill Mabel if they went to the door. So they need to walk along the ledge and smuggle her out. It's actually really smart. He'll never see them coming through the window. Oliver insists he won't walk out on the ledge, but Charles feels he needs to do it because he can save Mabel like he couldn't save Sazz. He opens the window and sees how high up it is. Oliver suggests that he can go over from Vince's place instead, as it's right next door to Mabel's. Charles likes it.
As they get downstairs to leave, they see Lester, who tells Oliver his Chuppah has arrived and asks where he should put it. Oliver tells him he has urgent business and puts Lester in charge, but warns him he'll destroy him if he gets anything wrong. Oliver gets a text that Loretta is in the courtyard. Lester says he got married in the courtyard, in the middle of the night with just the stars and the fountain. Charles and Oliver brush him off and leave.
Oliver greets Loretta in the courtyard. She tells him she doesn't think she can marry him. She explains that her show is moving to New Zealand and so she has to move there. Charles tells them to catch up when they can and Oliver says maybe she can quit the show. She says she can't quit, so he says he'll move with her. That's what they'll do. He races off, saying he'll explain it later. He tells her to go to his apartment, lock the door, and not answer it for anyone.
Rudy talks Vince through some exercises. There's a knock at the door and it's Charles and Oliver. They tell him they need to use his window and tell him Mabel's trapped next door with the killer, who is the movie writer. Vince says he told them it wasn't them. They're just a bunch of cute weirdos who torched a body. Charles gets the window open and starts to climb out as Oliver says he'll be helping with a front-door distraction. Charles gets onto the ledge and tells Sazz he needs her as he scoots along.
Charles invites Ghost Sazz to tap in for him any time she likes. He can't do it by himself. Oliver then taps him on the shoulder, revealing that he has decided to come along. Charles tells Oliver to go back, but Charles is Oliver's ride or die and he'd strongly prefer to ride. They continue scooting. They decide to turn around to make it easier to move. They merengue over to Mabel's window. They hear her doorbell ring and wonder who it is since Oliver is on the ledge.
Marshall looks through the peephole and sees Vince and Rudy, who say they want to borrow some sugar. He says Mabel's not there, but they continue listing off things they could use for their Sugar Chicken recipe. While he's distracted, Charles and Oliver tap on the glass, signaling to Mabel, who opens the window. Charles climbs in over Oliver's objection, saying that Marshall killed Sazz. He grabs Eva Longoria's multitool off the shelf and points it at Marshall, telling him to drop the gun as Vince and Rudy finally leave, saying they're going to get a crowbar. Charles shoots nails at the door, then kicks the gun out of Marshall's hand. Oliver picks it up and points it at Marshall. They force Marshall to sit and Charles asks Marshall why he killed Sazz. Mabel says it's because she wrote the "Only Murders" movie. Marshall says he tried to be a writer and did everything you're supposed to do. He tried to monetize his childhood by turning it into a screenplay. He tells them how his dad forced him to hunt. He was a perfect marksman, but all he wanted to do was write. Then he moved to Hollywood and his dad gave him six months. He asks him if they'd watch it. They give non-committal answers. Marshall wanted to prove his dad wrong, but nobody would touch his script. He was about to call it quits when he met Sazz, who was the first person to be nice to him. After the Ron Howard incident, Sazz said his stunting career was over, but he could get back to his writing. She even offered to read a draft of his screenplay.
Marshall gives Sazz his screenplay, which she agrees to read. He thinks he nailed it this time. She says he inspires her with the way his words make her feel things. She tells him it inspired her so much that she gave it a shot. She grabs her own screenplay. He's the only person who knows about it and it's her only copy. She asks him to give it a read. He takes it.
Marshall says he didn't have high hopes because Sazz didn't know anything about being a writer. But then he started reading and it was good, better than anything he'd ever written.
Marshall finishes reading Sazz's screenplay. She asks what he thought and he tells her it's bad. But everyone has to start somewhere.
Marshall wonders how Sazz could write something so great on her first try.
Marshall says he could make a copy and see if he can come up with some fixes. She says that would be great. He asks how much of it she's married to.
He says he came up with a new name, which was actually the hardest part. Then he just had to get the script into the right hands. He sent it all around town. He was just trying to get an agent. He didn't think anyone would buy it.
Bev Melon reads the script and picks up her phone.
Sazz looks over the script, which she got from some friends who were looking for stunt work on the movie.
Marshall says he should have known something was up when Sazz invited him over for a drink.
Marshall enters Sazz's apartment. She tells him to sit down. She shows him the script with his new name on it. She figured out pretty easily who he was. He says it just got out of hand. She says he told her the script was bad and then he stole it from her. She can take a hit, but this hurt way more. He says he'll call Bev Melon right away and says Bev is the one who bought their script. She says it's not theirs. She holds up her original copy and says it's hers. She hasn't even gotten to talk to Charles yet. She wanted to ask his permission before trying to sell it. Marshall's made a big mess. He knows, but the movie is his dream. Sazz also had a dream, to sell the script and open a trampoline park. When he questions that, she tells him it's none of his business. He tries to persuade her not to tell anyone. She tells him she doesn't trust him anymore. She's going to fly to New York to watch Charles make his Broadway debut. Then she has to tell him about this. Sazz tells Marshall to get out. He says he's sorry and she says she is, too.
Marshall asks if he was supposed to let her ruin everything he'd worked for. Then he remember the Dudenoff apartment and booked a red eye. Sazz had included a whole subplot in her first draft about the apartment, so Marshall knew the code to get in.
Marshall pries open the window in the Dudenoff apartment and assembles his rifle. He watches Sazz walk across the courtyard. He tracks her in his sight, but she goes inside.
Marshall says he couldn't do it.
Marshall tells himself he's a writer not a killer. Then he pulls off his fake facial hair and decides he's not a writer. He aims his rifle out the window and takes the shot, hitting Sazz. Then he climbs up and sees that Sazz is still alive and moving. He packs up his things and climbs out the window, then walks along the ledge.
Sazz writes her message to Charles in her own blood. Marshall arrives and climbs inside. He tells her he's sorry it had to end this way, but he needs this. He asks where the script with her name on it is. She just tells him "he" is going to get him. When Marshall asks who she means, she says her number one.
Charles says Marshall watched her die and then threw her down the trash chute. He says to think of it as her final stunt. Charles pulls the trigger on the multitool, but finds it's on the vibrator setting. Charles pulls out a corkscrew feature and throws it at Marshall, who dodges it and rolls over the bed, kicking the gun out of Oliver's hand. He holds the gun on them. He thinks maybe his dad was right and killing is his talent. As Mabel, Charles, and Oliver hold each other, a shot comes through the window and hits Marshall, who drops to the floor. They go to the window to see what happened and see Jan standing in Charles's apartment, holding a gun. She salutes them.
Mabel, Charles, and Oliver enter Charles's apartment, where Jan is being arrested. He asks how she got in and she says she never left. She's been living between his closet and the secret passageways for three weeks, waiting for him to figure out the case so she could get her revenge. They did it together for Sazz. She's good at seeing through small slits, but would have preferred to take Marshall out up close. She says she ate a lot of his Pirate Booty while hiding and says she'll send him the money. He says they can call it even. The officers take Jan away, but she insists it's not really goodbye because they're endgame. Oliver has an idea for how they can celebrate.
Eugene, Eva, and Zach film a scene. Mabel, Charles, and Oliver watch from the side. Mabel says those poor bastards think they only have to solve Tim Kono's murder. Charles says they don't know the bodies keep dropping. Oliver takes that as Charles saying again that Loretta is going to get murdered. Eva, Eugene, and Zach approach and Mabel admits that her level of cringe is low. Eugene heard they caught the killer and thinks they couldn't do it without the actors. Eugene's not sure what exactly they did, but they can't say it didn't help. Zach knew Marshall was a bad writer. He was trying to get Zach's character to say 'not' after every sentence. Bev comes to Mabel and says she has set up a pitch meeting next week for Mabel, so she hopes Mabel's been fleshing out her button pitch. Mabel would rather tell Sazz's story. Bev says the algorithm really likes buttons. Mabel doesn't thinks she belongs in the film industry. Bev's phone rings and she takes it. Trina and Tawny say they need to keep shooting. Charles looks at the script and says he's appreciates the movie in a whole new way now because Sazz wrote it. Charles goes to Ghost Sazz and says he's sorry she's missing this. She says it would have been nice. He pats the writer's chair and say he thinks it's hers. She takes it, but then points to the upturned box she was sitting on and says she misses it. She tells him he did good, which he knows is him telling himself that. He decides to take it anyway. They tip their hats at each other. Oliver and Mabel watch this from a distance and decide to let Charles talk to himself.
Howard pushes Winnie in her dog stroller down the aisle. Next, Oliver comes in with Charles and Mabel on either side of him. They look at the end of the aisle and Oliver starts to worry something has happened. Uma screams, startling everyone, but then says she just thought she saw a roach. Finally, Loretta appears, escorted by Dickie and Will. When they get to the end of the aisle, Will says they lost track of time. Dickie adds that they had a lot of catching up to do. They start the ceremony. After it's all done, they walk back down the aisle.
Everyone dances at the reception.
Oliver tells Loretta they put on a good show. She says he's the most extraordinary man she's ever known. He brought down a murderer and he can merengue. She looks over at Mabel and Charles and tells Oliver she can't take him away from them. He says he can't wait to be in New Zealand, but she knows he's lying. She says they go their happy ending and their relationship has never been conventional. They don't have to start now. Oliver says they can talk about it later.
Mabel asks Charles if Oliver and Loretta went up already. Charles says yes, because Loretta has to leave first thing tomorrow. They're taking care of their honeymoon business while they can. Mabel would rather picture them playing show tunes together. Charles says he and his date had a great time. He pulls Sazz's ashes out of his bag. He brought them because Sazz loved weddings, but he's ready to say goodbye and is planning to spread them on the land that was supposed to be her trampoline park. He thinks she'd like to be there. The elevator opens and a woman steps off. She says she was upstairs looking for them, because there was no doorman on duty, so she took a shot. She wants to hire them to find her husband. Mabel says they're not a detective firm. She says her husband is Nicky Caccimelio. Or was if you believe the news. She pays very well, but Charles says they only investigate murders in the building. She says what happened to Nicky has everything to do with the building. They wish her good luck. She's disappointed. She thought they could do what the cops couldn't. She introduces herself as Sofia Caccimelio, handing them a card and telling them to call if they change their minds. They get on the elevator as she leaves. Charles says she's quite a dame. When Mabel gives him a look, he says he means it in the same way that Judy Dench is a dame.
As Loretta prepares to leave, she asks if Oliver's going to come in a few weeks. He says he will. She asks where he's been and kisses him, then leaves. She throws her bouquet back at him and he catches it. She tells him she loves him as her car pulls away.
Charles, Mabel, and Oliver record the last episode of their podcast, wrapping up the case and saying they got through the whole wedding day without a new body. They walk through the courtyard, enjoying the nice day, but stop when they see Lester's body in the fountain. Charles calls 911 and learns there are 72 emergencies ahead of him.
