Detective Daniel Kreps is a recurring character in Season 2 of Only Murders in the Building. He is the lead detective in the second season's Bunny Folger murder case.
He is played by Michael Rapaport.
History
Meeting Cinda and Planting Evidence
Unable to make ends meet on just his salary, Kreps took on additional jobs to make extra money. One of these jobs was helping with the investigation into the disappearance of Becky Butler in Oklahoma. While working this job, Kreps met Cinda Canning and fell for her. This led to him planting evidence at the crime scene, presumably to help Cinda.[1]
Questioning the Trio
After Mabel, Charles, and Oliver were arrested after being found with the body of Bunny Folger, they were taken to the police department, where Detectives Kreps and Williams questioned them about the death. When they questioned Mabel, Kreps played the clip from the podcast of Mabel talking about her recurring dream of stabbing an intruder with a knitting needle. Mabel asked for a lawyer at that point. They said that her story, that she came back to her apartment to get champagne and Bunny was just there, had a lot of holes. Mabel asked again for a lawyer again. Then they surprised Mabel by asking her what she did with the knife. Mabel hadn't even known she was stabbed with a knife. While they were talking to Oliver, they asked if he hated Bunny, the board president who wanted him out of the building. During Charles's interview, he drew from his experience on Brazzos and tried to find the one-way mirror. Williams became irritated with this and told him to sit down so they could get started. After they were interviewed, they were all released, but told they were persons of interest in the crime.[2]
Kreps later summoned the trio and Cinda Canning to Bunny Folger's apartment to yell at them and stop them from podcasting. When the trio noticed that Detective Williams wasn't there, they asked where she was. Kreps told them she was in Denver on maternity leave.[3]
Blackout
In the aftermath of the blackout, Kreps came to the Arconia, where Lucy told him that the killer had just chased them through the building. Mabel questioned his assertion that he was in the neighborhood and he told her he was interested in her. He'd seen the video of her stabbing someone on the subway. Mabel's suspicion was aroused when he grabbed his shoulder after Howard brushed past him and she noticed that he had glitter on his neck behind his ear, accidentally revealing himself as Glitter Guy.[4]
Facing Off with Mabel
Kreps was at a gym boxing when Mabel came in. She said she had some questions for him, but he reminded her that that was his job. She asked him how his arm was doing since she stabbed him. He agreed to let her ask questions only if she got in the ring with him. He first had her hold the bag. She told him she'd seen the glitter on his neck and asked how he knew about the evidence drop-off. He feigned ignorance, but told her the matchbook was gone and the fingerprint wasn't his anyway. They moved into the ring, where she asked him why he killed Bunny. He said he didn't. She told him she couldn't figure out how he pulled off such an intricate plan when he was so stupid. He told her he was smart enough not to get tripped up by her. Kreps told Mabel that her entire generation believed everyone wanted to hear what they had to say because their parents and teachers told them people cared. He questioned how, if he was so stupid, he landed the smartest woman on the planet and how was he able to do a better podcast than them right away. He told her she was the prime suspect in a murder he was investigating and people went away all the time for things they didn't do. Then he told Mabel to leave.[5]
Arrest
After the trio figured out that Poppy had murdered Bunny and that Kreps had helped her with that as well as manufacturing her own disappearance and death, they told Williams what they knew and Kreps was arrested, followed by Poppy.[6]
Personality
Detective Kreps has a brusque and impatient manner, especially with the trio when he is questioning them. Detective Williams implies that he is not very intelligent, as she involuntarily laughs when Mabel calls him smart. He swears a lot, which Mabel says is because he wants to sound tough. He hates the trio and Cinda Canning, because they are messing with his investigation.
Career
Kreps comments that the Folger case was supposed to be a "career-making case" for him. Cinda Canning suggests that he has a bad reputation in the NYPD.
