Bev Melon is a recurring character in Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building. She is the producer of the movie based on the podcast.
She is portrayed by Molly Shannon.
History[]
Bev Melon saw the buzz around the Only Murders in the Building podcast and decided to develop it herself. She recruited Marshall P. Pope to write the script, Tawny and Trina Brothers to direct it, and Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria, and Eugene Levy to star as Oliver, Mabel, and Charles respectively. She then contacted Oliver, Mabel, and Charles to get them to come to LA to meet with her. When they started talking about compensation, she said whatever number they had in mind, she'd make it work. Mabel then excused herself from the meeting.
Bev invited them to a party she was throwing that night and at the meeting, introduced them to the actors playing them in the movie. When Oliver offended Zach by not recognizing him, Zach threatened to walk. Bev agreed to green-light his dream project in exchange for him staying. Then she left them to get to know their actor counterparts and said she was ready whenever Mabel wanted to talk.
After talking to Eva Longoria, Mabel came back to Bev and handed her a piece of paper with an offer Bev accepted.[2]
Tawny, Trina, and Bev came to the Arconia, where they held auditions for the movie. Among the auditions was Howard, who auditioned to play himself. They loved it, but told him that Josh Gad would be playing him in the movie. Despite this disappointment, they declared him amazing and said they would nurture him.
Later, Bev was at the site where Sazz was planning to build her trampoline park, The Sazz Pataki Impact Academy. She was in one of the buildings there when Oliver, Charles, and Mabel arrived. They were initially relieved to see her, but then she pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot them if they moved.[3] When they begged her not to shoot them, she turned on a light and sighed in relief. She hadn't realized who they were. They asked her to put the gun down. She said it wasn't loaded, but then fired it three times, showing it was. Bev dropped the gun and Mabel took it and asked if Bev killed Sazz. Bev said she didn't and provided an alibi for that night. Then she said someone on the movie did kill Sazz. She had a voicemail from the night Sazz died from Sazz, saying that Bev needed to call her because there was a problem with the movie. Bev knew it was hard to get a movie made and didn't want to deal with it, then she heard Sazz had died, so she figured it was fine. Since Mabel, Charles, and Oliver were working on the case, she decided to step back from that and focus on saving the movie.
When Mabel, Charles, and Oliver went to the production office to look at suspects, Bev held Mabel back to talk to her about what she was going to do with the money from her life rights. Mabel said she was going to put it into her business and claimed to be a podcast producer with multiple projects. However, when Bev asked her to pitch some, she floundered. Despite this, Bev was intrigued and offered to set Mabel up with a contact in the business.
Mabel, Charles, and Oliver came to the publicity photo shoot for the movie and Bev was pleased to see them there. They had Eva, Eugene, and Zach as well as stand-ins dressed as them, plus mirrors were set up to create the illusion that there were more of them. The photo shoot was interrupted by gun shots.[4]
In the aftermath of the shooting, which injured Glen Stubbins and Zach Galifianakis, Bev called for an emergency production meeting. She said that the police were investigating the shooting, but it wouldn't affect the movie. Additionally, she said she'd just gotten back from the hospital, where Zach told her the show must go on. In reality, he asked to be let out of the movie and she threatened to sue him. Then Bev asked everyone to sign waivers releasing her from any liability.[5]
Bev came to Doreen's house on Long Island to find the trio. When she arrived, she asked Charles if the Brothers sisters were the killers because Bev would have to fire them if they were, but could spin it if it was only a maybe. Charles said he was pretty sure they weren't, which Bev relayed to the person on the phone. She complained about the studio wanting to pull the plug on the movie because of all the catastrophes. After ranting about hating the actors, she left to go take a nap.
Hours later, she returned refreshed and happy because she'd yelled at the studio executives and they were full speed ahead with the movie.[1]
Mabel came to see Bev, who asked Mabel to help with the script, particularly her dialogue, as each draft Marshall turned in seemed to get worse and she struggled to remember the script she fell in love with. Mabel asked Bev to help her find Ron Howard and Bev agreed to give her his address in exchange for Mabel going over the new pages. Mabel said if the lead worked out, she'd consider going over the pages, so Bev gave her the address.[6]
After Sazz's murder was solved, production of the movie continued, with Sazz finally known to be the actual writer. Bev approached Mabel, saying she'd set up a meeting for Mabel to pitch her button idea. Mabel said she'd rather tell Sazz's story. When Bev said the algorithm liked buttons, Mabel said she didn't think the business was for her and walked away.[7]
